Me, Alan Cains. I've been skateboarding for 38 years. In late 2021, I was made redundant from my nursing role. This gave me the opportunity to rethink my future. So I decided to turn my lifelong passion for skateboarding into something meaningful. At the time, Newport had been without an indoor skatepark for years, leaving a real gap for young people and the local skate community.

I established No Comply as a not-for-profit organisation in December 2021. In mid-2022, I completed my Skateboard GB coaching qualification, and received funding to buy skateboards, pads, and helmets, and to deliver free workshops for six months. This gave many young people their first opportunity to try skateboarding in supportive environment.

Finding a suitable space was one of our biggest early challenges. Thankfully, Friars Walk took a chance on us, offering an unused retail unit and allowing us to create one of the UK’s first skateparks in a shopping centre. The park was designed and built in just 11 days by leading European wooden skatepark builder Trevor Johnson

Our current venue is great, but it's become too small to keep up with demand. We also want to diversify what we offer, incorporating arts, multimedia, breakdancing, circus skills and even crazy golf, so we can be a true hub for the young people Newport. 

We’re currently working with the Welsh Government on a design, planning, and feasibility study for the next phase. Our ambition is to transform an unused space beneath a bridge in Newport city centre into a much larger, purpose-built facility. This development has the potential to attract tens of thousands of visitors from across the UK, while providing a long-term, sustainable home for the skate community.
